Discovering Bob Mizer’s Portraits

Discovering Bob Mizer’s Portraits

In the implementation of our new archiving system, we are constantly reminded of just how prolific Bob Mizer truly was. He produced new images almost daily, and while most of his photographs focus on the male body, Mizer did in fact produce a fair amount of portraits. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of examples hidden in the AMG archives.

This set of AMG office favorite, Gerald Oglesby, is a prime example of the power of these images. Many of Mizer’s models, especially in the later years, were sex workers and often straight. In his portraits, which have never been widely viewed, he captured the complexity and severity of their stations in life. Mizer’s portraits are not currently on display anywhere that we know of, but we are working to gain exposure for these and other rare offerings from the AMG archives, so keep checking back .
